Literature/ Reading Presentation Notes

The Forever War Terms Handout Astrophysics: Study of physics on a macro scale.  Astronomical Unit : (AU) The distance between the Earth and the Sun, used to describe relatively small units of distance. Large Magellanic Cloud : Galaxy within relative distance of the Milky Way. This is where Mandella fights the Taurans in his first deployment.  Collapsar : A star which has collapsed under its own gravity. Exists afterwards as a white dwarf, neutron star, or a black hole. Used in the story to travel large distances by using the gravity well to slingshot themselves through space. Relativity : Time is affected by gravity, and therefore time passes slower when closer to high density areas (planets, etc.). Time is also affected by speed. The closer you get to the speed of light, the slower time will pass. Do to all of this, time passes differently in different parts of space. Space travel causes time dilation. Time Dilation : When time on Earth passes differently t...

Blog Post #7 -- CCSS for Reading Literature and CCSS for Reading Informational Texts available at  http://www.corestandards.org/ELA-Literacy/ and NES text pages 1-87 It’s very interesting to see how few people can identify sponsored content. 80% fail, according to page 27. I don’t think I’ve struggled with this much, as I usually make a habit of teasing commercials for being so skewed. There is a lot of focus on persuasive texts, which makes sense. Propaganda is a persuasive text, and advertisements and attempting to persuade the reader into buying a product. It’s very important to realize when a piece of media is attempting to commit social engineering in one form or another. Ethos, pathos, and logos review on page 31 makes me wonder if my initial understanding of the three was derivative. Ethos, for example, is described as an appeal to authority, whereas before I believed it to be an appeal to ethics. Perhaps it refers to both. This requires some extra focus. Around page 4...

Grammar Presentation Handout

Free English Grammar E-book Handout When life gives you lemons, tax the lemonade -Government Proverb Rational: This text provides an excellent source of grammar knowledge. There are 99 pages of clear direction on the rules of grammar which anybody can use. Completely free and available on a whim… gotta love that internet. Seriously, I wish I had discovered this when I was in middle school. I would have used this text as a resource throughout my academic career. That is what I wish to provide to students: the resources I wish I’d had.  Outline: In order to avoid essentially copying the table of contents, I’ll address a broad view of this book. One wonderful tool provided with this book is its table of contents. It is clear and unscrambled direction designed to bring the reader directly to the topic they need to review. Each lesson contains multiple examples. There are even a few hyperlinks to online quizzes related to specific elements of grammar. This particular edition ...
Blog Post #6 -- CCSS for Writing and CCSS for Language at http://www.corestandards.org/ELA-Literacy/ and NES text pages 88-129 Quotation marks can be kind of weird. Of course, they have the primary purpose of indicating dialogue. However, they can also be used in different ways such as indicating sarcasm. Although, personally I prefer to use italics to show sarcasm, but in person people will use air quotes to indicate it. It also took me many years before I honestly realized that punctuation marks belong inside quotation marks instead of outside. NES refers to this in the cold, unfeeling, and robotic tone common in textbooks. It refers to it as: “Terminal Punctuation in Relation to Quotation Marks.” Which I here employ the rules within the title for added meta affect. Overall this selection from the textbook is a quick overview on the grammar class I took a few quarters ago. Most of these rules I’ve already been over at one point or another, but it’s always good to review. Over ...
